Chapter 16

Talia

“I don’t know if it’s anything. There was a moment when I thought he might kiss me but we were interrupted, and he acted like I was the last person on earth he would kiss.”

Talia had tried to tell herself it was because Maxwell was her mentor. That he was trying to be professional. But that didn’t seem like his style. So, she’d ask her friends. Anonymously.

“Can we at least get a first name?” Doris asked.

Talia shook her head adamantly, picking up a baby-pink vibrator off the shelf they browsed.

“Would we know him?” Emily asked, wondering if it would matter.

“No,” Talia lied. “But I don’t think it’s anything, so even saying his name is pointless.”

“But you were in his arms and you guys were about to kiss.”

“By accident…but yes. And then he totally freaked out on me.” Talia finished the story. Again.

“How did you get in his arms?”

“We bumped into each other.”

“He was a total stranger? Damn, gurl, you are being naughty….” Doris slow-clapped her friend’s sexual awakening.

“No.” Talia rolled her eyes at Doris. “I know him. We were working on something together.”

“Did you want to kiss him?” Emily asked, picking up the violet version of the vibrator Talia held. Thanks to Isadora’s story steaming up their nights, they had decided to have book club while browsing sex toys. Security in numbers and all.

Talia turned the box over, pretending to read it and think. Pretending. The answer was about to kill her. “Yeah,” she said softly. “I did.”

“Then he probably did, too,” Emily reassured.

“That’s what I thought. Until we got interrupted and he acted like he had a spitting cobra in his arms.” Talia sighed and put the pink penis back. “Total confidence crusher.”

“Will you see him again?”

She nodded.

“Maybe he got spooked. Guys can be total wimps when they like you. Just feel it out. If he likes you, you’ll know.” Emily put a hand on her shoulder and smiled encouragingly.

That was good advice about wimpy guys. Maxwell wasn’t a wimp. If he wanted someone, he didn’t care who knew. Which put Talia’s chances of a fantasy fulfilled at about zero.

“A guy would be crazy to confuse you with a spitting cobra.” Further down the aisle, Doris perused candles that melted into massage oil. “Look at you. Smart, nice, and you’ve been knocking it out of the park lately with these outfits. You’re totally channeling Audrey Hepburn.” Doris admired her short blazer and ankle pants.

The blazer was Mrs. Radclyffe’s. She’d shortened the sleeves, moved a few buttons, and it was a great fit. More important—she felt pretty. A big part of her had hoped to run into Maxwell on campus that day. Maybe that was why she was so disappointed.

“Thanks, guys. I’m just reminded, again, of why I don’t bother dating.” Talia rolled her neck and chuckled at Doris’s reaction to the candle she’d just smelled. She leaned over and took a whiff when Doris offered it to her. An involuntary gag choked her. “What is that scent?”

“I don’t want to know.
